Dental implants are an effective way of restoring function and form to your smile. Missing or severely damaged teeth are replaced through implant dentistry with the placement of an artificial root and tooth. This method is effective as the artificial root provides a strong foundation for the composite tooth. When considering dental implants in the Beverly Hills area, there are two options for your consideration: endosteal or subperiosteal.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal, or root form implants, are placed and fused directly into your jawbone. The procedure requires your restorative dentist to make an incision in your gum to expose your jawbone. He will then drill into your jawbone and insert the artificial root into it, fusing it to the bone. Your gums will then be given time to heal and secure the implant into place. On your second visit, your dentist will attach a post and artificial tooth to the implant, finishing the process. Endosteal implants are the most common form of implant dentistry. They work most effectively on jawbones that are dense with sufficient measurements to hold the implants in place

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal Implants

When the jawbone is not dense enough or not spacious enough for endosteal implants, your dentist may consider giving you subperiosteal implants. Rather than drilling into the jawbone, a lightweight metal frame is placed below the gums and onto the jawbone. Once the gums heal over the frame it becomes secured in place. Posts on the frame emerge above the gums and act as foundations for composite teeth. On your second visit these artificial teeth will be placed onto the posts to complete the process. Elderly patients who have experienced bone loss in the jaw are primary candidates for subperiosteal implants.

Which is Right For You?

If your jawbone is healthy, chances are you are a good candidate for endosteal implants. If you’ve suffered from severe bone loss or oral decay, you may need to opt for subperiosteal implants. Both forms of implant dentistry provide you with a gorgeous, fully functional replacement tooth.
